SEF will be phased out in October, according to the Minister of Internal Administration. José Luís Carneiro stated that the integration of SEF employees into other forces will lead to the extinction of SEF by October 2023.
The President of the Republic approved two regulations related to the merger of SEF, including a transition regime for workers and the establishment of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), which will replace SEF in administrative procedures concerning foreign nationals.
According to the government official, employees in general and administrative roles will be transferred to AIMA, while those in inspection and supervision roles will join the Judiciary Police as part of the process.
With the conclusion of SEF, administrative functions will be transferred to AIMA and the Institute of Registration and Notary (IRN), while law enforcement powers will be assigned to the Public Security Police (PSP), National Republican Guard (GNR), and Judiciary Police (PJ).
The GNR will oversee and control maritime and land borders, including cruise terminals.
The PSP will be responsible for monitoring, inspecting, and controlling airport borders, while the PJ will handle investigations related to illegal immigration and human trafficking.
